Thanks for visiting my blog, here lies a few infrequent mutterings which will hopefully expand over time to become something of a little more value.
For those of you who are not aware (and why would you be!), I recently gained a position at Glasgow based web design agency Alienation Digital as a full-time designer. This was somewhat unexpected due to my lack of formal education in the field but a pleasant surprise all the same! My freelancing had enabled me to build up a decent portfolio and gain some relevant experience but this is no replacement for working in the industry full-time, as the legend Elliot Jay Stocks once said, “work for the man first”.
And an experience it is! Learning on the job has become an everyday occurrence, there is always something new on my desk that makes me have to stop, think and learn. Some-days I leave work with my head so full it hurts. Others I can feel like I have so much still to learn that I will never fully fulfil my new employers expectations. Thankfully, they are patient as I learn and struggle towards the level the other designers seem to effortlessly maintain.
So far I can honestly say that the move to a full-time position, even the short period i have been at it, has enabled me to develop quicker as a designer than the sum of my freelance experience to date. My CSS skills have been challenged by the way the company’s work-flow and process. My design aesthetic has already changed and evolved through interaction with new types of clients and also through feedback from the other designers in the team. I have enjoyed all the challenges and trials to date and look forward to a, hopefully, long career at the firm!
